SOLUTIONS Final Event
Tues 23 June 2009, 76 Portland Place London, W1B 1NT
This event will present the findings of the SOLUTIONS (Sustainability Of Land Use and Transport In Outer NeighbourhoodS) research project. This five-year £1.75m research project funded by EPSRC investigates how towns and cities can be planned so that they are socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable and economically efficient. The focus is on spatial policy, in terms of land use planning, transport systems and built form. It involves in-depth case studies of London, Tyne and Wear and Cambridge, carried out in partnership with local authorities and other stakeholders. These case studies involve land use and transport models to forecast the effect of alternative spatial policies to year 2031 within the strategic context of the city and surrounding region. The options tested include a continuation of current spatial planning policy, a ‘compact city’ policy, market-led dispersal, and planned new settlement and urban extensions. The results are then assessed across a range of environmental, social, resources and economic indicators. There are also case studies within these areas at the neighbourhood scale. The research has been carried out by an interdisciplinary team from the universities of Cambridge, Leeds, Newcastle, University College London, and the West of England. The research aims to provide guidance for policy makers and practitioners on spatial planning and transport policy.
This event will be of interest to policy makers, practitioners and academics involved in spatial planning, transport policy, and urban design.
It will aim to answer questions such as:
- What will be the longer term impacts of current planning policies?
- Does building at higher density reduce energy use?
- How much difference can spatial planning and transport policy make to sustainability?
