Urban Structuring
Urban Structuring investigates the application of generative systems to urban layout, by exploring systems used in existing best practice and from current thinking.
The research sets out to determine which generative systems with associated rules and constraints are appropriate for generating useful sustainable urban layout patterns. Using physical patterns and data from other strands of the SOLUTIONS project as both input and target outcomes, different generative systems/programs will be tested and evaluated.
The research also raises the question of how patterns are related to programs, in the sense that programs are the rules by which the patterns are generated and taking into account any emergent effects the application of a program may have.
The results of the research will then be analysed to show how they relate to different urban/regulatory contexts and hence inform the development a set of principles for planning and design guidance.
