SOLUTIONS-SIG1 joint workshop on modelling
28 June 2005, London

Purpose

SOLUTIONS and the Special Interest Group on Transport and Spatial Development (SIG1) of the World Conference on Transport Research Society, organised a joint workshop on modelling on 28 June 2005 at UCL. The key purpose of this workshop was to present the SOLUTIONS micro scale model of land use and transport that is being developed to test the sustainability of neighbourhood design options for new developments, and to explore how it can be linked with the strategic model that operates at a city-wide scale.

In the first session, three presentations were made. The first presentation by Dr Hargreaves introduced the SOLUTIONS project and explained the need for a micro scale model. Dr Caruso then introduced the SOLUTIONS micro scale model outlining the draft framework of the model and the various issues that are being considered. Professor Hunt presented his comments and the possible future directions for development of this model.

The Presentations

  • Context and objectives for the micro-scale modelling
Dr Tony Hargreaves, University of Cambridge
  • A method for coupling a microsimulation and a strategic LUTI model in order to evaluate suburban planning options
Dr Geoffrey Caruso, University of Cambridge University
  • Disaggregating a strategic LUTI model to evaluate local design
Professor JD Hunt, University of Calgary, Canada

The second session was an open discussion in which various research issues were identified.
